Have you lost your Permesso di Soggiorno or has it been stolen? Here’s how to apply for a Duplicate

Losing your permesso di soggiorno or having it stolen can be a very stressful situation. Italian law provides a specific procedure for obtaining a duplicate of the document. In this article, we explain step by step what to do, which documents to prepare and how to submit your application to obtain a new permesso.

What is a duplicate permesso di soggiorno?

A duplicate is a new permesso di soggiorno issued by the Questura when the original document has been lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged to the point that it can no longer be used.

A duplicate is not a renewal of your permesso di soggiorno. Its purpose is to replace a document that is still valid but is no longer available or usable.

If, instead, your permesso di soggiorno is about to expire or has already expired, you need to submit an application for renewal rather than an application for a duplicate.

You can apply for renewal from 60 days before the expiry date until 60 days after the expiry date.

The first thing to do: file a report

If your permesso di soggiorno has been lost or stolen, you should go as soon as possible to a State Police office or Carabinieri station.

You must file a report of loss or theft. It is important to keep a copy of the report because it must be attached to your application for a duplicate.

Do not throw away or lose the original document if you still have it, as it may be important to have it with you in case of checks or when you are asked to provide documents.

How to apply for a duplicate

In most cases, a duplicate is requested through the Postal Kit (Kit Postale), which is available at authorized post offices with a Sportello Amico counter.

In the kit, you only need to complete Form 1, following the instructions, and include all the required documentation: personal details, contact information (address, email and telephone number) and the request for a duplicate.

You then submit the kit at the post office counter, where you pay the required fees and receive a receipt.

The receipt is very important because it proves that you have submitted your application and contains a code that you can use to check the status of your application.

Documents to attach

Generally, you will need to provide:

  • a copy of the report of loss or theft;
  • a copy of your passport (the page containing your personal details and any pages containing relevant stamps or visas);
  • a copy of your permesso di soggiorno, if available;
  • a copy of your tax code (codice fiscale), if you have one;
  • completed Form 1;
  • the payment slip for the application.

How much does it cost?

The cost may include:

  • the required contribution: €30.46;
  • the Postal Kit: free of charge;
  • the cost of sending the application through Poste Italiane (registered/insured mail: €30.00);
  • the revenue stamp (marca da bollo): €16.00.

The amounts may change over time. It is always advisable to check the current fees before submitting your application.

After submitting your application

If you submitted your application through Poste Italiane, you will be given an appointment at the Questura for fingerprinting and identification procedures.

You can then check the status of your application online using the number shown on your receipt.

When the new residence permit is ready, the Questura will inform you of the date when you can collect it.

What should you do if you find your old permesso di soggiorno?

If you find your old permesso di soggiorno after submitting the application, do not use it.

It is advisable to immediately inform the competent Questura and follow the instructions you receive. The document may no longer be valid once the duplicate procedure has been started.

Some useful tips

  • Always make a photocopy of your permesso di soggiorno and passport and keep it separately from the original documents.
  • Also keep a digital copy of your documents in a secure location.
  • File a report as soon as you realize that your document has been lost or stolen.
  • Carefully keep the receipt issued by the post office or the Questura. You may need it to prove that you have applied for a duplicate.
