Educational and vocational training – IeFP

IeFP are education and vocational training schools that are managed directly by the Regions. These schools prepare you to carry out a specific profession. So these are schools where many practical activities and workshops are done. Read how many IeFP courses exist and how you can enroll.

IeFP courses, or Istruzione e Formazione Professionale in italian, are another type of secondary education. These schools are very similar to technical and vocational schools because they prepare students on a professional level.

The IeFP courses, however, are managed by the Regions and are a little shorter as they last 3 or 4 years, depending on the course and location. To enroll, you must have obtained the licenza media at the end of scuola media, or middle school.

The IeFP courses also last from September to June, for 5 or 6 days a week.

Here, students learn basic subjects, such as language, math, and history, but they also get a lot of hands-on training. IeFP courses include many workshops and internships at local businesses to learn while working. This way, students gain professional experience during the study period.

It is possible to register online for IeFP courses too at Centri di formazione professionale, training centers accredited by the Regions that adhere to the online registration system.

It is possible to register online for these regions: Piemonte, Lombardia, Veneto, Liguria, Lazio, Molise, Sicilia, Toscana, and Sardegna

If it is not possible for you to register online for an IeFP course, you can contact the school of your interest directly for more information, by visiting in person, by calling, or through their website if available.

Istituti professionali and IeFP courses are very similar. Both are chosen by students who usually plan to start working after finishing these schools.

Istituti professionali are vocational schools that are run by the government and, therefore, are organized in the same way at the national level. These schools last 5 years and at the end of the fifth year, students who pass the exam obtain a Diploma. Students who want to continue studying can continue their studies at the university.

IeFP courses are not managed by the state, but by the regions. The courses last 3 or 4 years, depending on the study area that the student chooses.
Training in IeFP courses is even more practical than in vocational schools. For IeFP courses, there are more laboratory and workshop hours and fewer theory hours.

At the end of their studies, students obtain a professional qualification or a technical Diploma depending on the course. After an IeFP course, you cannot enroll at the university, but if you want to continue studying you must first go to istituti tecnici or istituti professionali.
