Permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari (Residence permit for family reasons)

The permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari allows the family members of non-EU country citizens who legally resides in Italy to live and stay in the country with their family member. This permesso is issued for family-related reasons, such as ricongiungimento familiare (family reunification) or accompagnamento di un familiare (accompanying a family member).

Duration of the permesso

The duration of the permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari  is linked to the duration of the permesso di soggiorno of the family member who provides maintenance.

How can I RENEW my permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari ?

The renewal of permesso di soggiorno per motivi familiari can be requested at the Questura through the authorized post office, by filling out the appropriate forms (kit postale) 60 days before the expiration of the permesso di soggiorno.

To renew your permesso di soggiorno, remember that it is necessary to demonstrate cohabitation with the family member who provides maintenance.

Remember to include in the envelope (after filling out form 1) documents such as:

• Photocopy of your expiring permesso di soggiorno;
• Photocopy of your passport;
• Photocopy of your identity card;
• Photocopy of the permesso di soggiorno of the family member who provides maintenance;
• Photocopy of a signed maintenance declaration;
• Photocopy of the income of the family member who provides maintenance;
• Photocopy of the stato di famiglia (family status certificate)

WARNING

Only include photocopies in the postal kit. Never send the original documents!

You will bring the original documents with you on the day of the appointment at the Questura.

How much do I have to pay?

If you use the postal kit, you will have to pay:

• €30.00: raccomandata (registered letter)
• €16.00: marca da bollo (revenue stamp)
• A bollettino (bulletin) which costs:
  • €70.46: permesso di soggiorno duration 3 months – 1 year
  • €80.46: permesso di soggiorno duration 1 year – 2 years

Please note, if you have lost your document or need to update it (not renew it), you will only have to pay €30.46.
